replacement windows
m t asked:

we have lived in our home for five years and there is a double hung window in our basement. it is rather beat up and needs to be replaced. i only need one window so maybe i can spend a little more if i need to but i’m still looking for quality at an affordable price. what are some good brands to look at? there are so many. should i even go to lowes or home depot or are there windows junk?

Andersen & Pella are high quality windows. Lowes and Home Depot sells them.

Yes Pella are good, I think another question to ask

Pella and Anderson are good. But, the important factors are solar heat gain coefficent and U factor. In the south where the sun is strong all day, solar heat gain rating of the window glass is the important number. The lower the better. In the north, where conserving heat is more important, the U factor should not be more than 0.35, or lower. Check with your local building code official for the requirements for new homes – and then follow the same recommendation.

Andersen, Pella and Marvin are all great brands but cost quite a bit more. If this was in your living room or master bedroom, I would recommend one of them. Since this is in your basement, something along the lines of an upper end Jeld-Win would work out nicely. Any of their models that qualify for an energy tax rebate would be pretty safe.
