It better than wmp in terms of file types it supports. It virtually plays everything.
But then its just a player it won’t do anything else for you..

No. VLC has absolutely nothing to do with Windows Media Player other than it is a media player. You need a DVD Decoder for a lot of media players anyway before you can play DVD’s on them. Some cost money, but if you look around you’ll find a free one. Xvid is usually free.
