replacement windows
Sylvia L asked:

I want to replace five windows in my Town house and I just got an estimate of $800 per window installed. Is this too much for custom windows direct from local factory. I want a good product but $800@ window I am not sure. Help somebody.

Depends on what kind of windows…good windows are anderson jeld wen or mw….bad windows include pella and…well I just forgot…thats not too bad of a price for custom sizes and install. double hung low-e windows are not cheap these days. I dont know that I’d go to the Home Depot, depending on where you live, there are door and window companies that sell them and hire a local trusted carpenter, Home depot’s sub-contractors are crap.

The answer of course depends upon the size of the unit and the quality of the materials. I’d get at least 3 estimates including Home Depot and Lowes if you have one near by. You might also try having a local carpenter quote the job as he/she might have some good sources as well. Whomever you choose, make sure they have good references and call at least two of them.

You did not mentioned what type of windows- wood or vinyl. I assume it is vinyl and if you call your local window company, you will get better quality window for a better price. I do not like Home Depot Vinyl Windows, quality it is not that good. If you looking for Andersen wood windows- Home Depot is the cheapest.

“It Depends” is the real answer. The search for the right replacement window is similar to shopping for a house – different factors vary in weight depending on individual tastes. Check this blog for a great synopsis:
